How to Get My Old eSATA Storage Device Recognized on My PC?

I recently received an older media storage device from my father that uses an eSATA connection. I bought an eSATA to USB cable to connect it to my computer, and while the device powers on, my PC isn't recognizing it. The only notification I get is when I unplug it, which says 'USB Device went away. ASMT ASM105xt went away.' I'm aiming to use this 1TB storage, so I'm looking for suggestions on how to have my PC detect it. Any help would be appreciated!

You should run the `lsusb` command in your terminal while the drive is connected to check if it's being recognized by your system. Sometimes you'll need to experiment with the order of plugging in the power and USB cables. Try powering on the device first, then plug in the USB, or do the reverse. This can help get the device to wake up properly.

I looked for `Isusb` but couldn’t find it at first. Then I managed to run `lsusb`, and it recognized the device as an ASMedia Technology bridge. Now I’m just trying to figure out how to actually add it as a storage drive.

It might be a power issue with the drive. Some eSATA adapters have an extra power input, so check if yours has that option. If not, try connecting to a more powerful USB port or unplugging other USB devices to ensure it can draw enough power.

The drive lights up, so I think it’s powered enough. I do get the notification when I unplug, which seems to indicate it’s recognized. I'm just trying to figure out how to access it.
