I recently converted an SSD from my old laptop into an external drive. Now, I'm trying to go through the files on it and delete unnecessary Windows files, but I keep getting a message saying I need permission from TrustedInstaller to proceed. I'm not sure how to obtain this permission. My only alternative thought is to save the files I actually need to another location, reformat the drive, and then transfer them back. Is that really the only option I have?

You can change the ownership of the folder to your username through the folder’s properties, which should allow you to adjust the permissions. But honestly, if you just want to clear it out, moving the files you need and then formatting the drive might be the simpler route.
There's actually a command that can help you out: it's called takeown. You can find more information on how to use it in the official Microsoft documentation. It allows you to take ownership of files or folders so you can delete them without getting blocked by TrustedInstaller.
