I've inherited a situation in a large warehouse with over 15 endpoints for printing and ERP access, where around 10 to 20 general staff members not very skilled with computers are operating handheld scanners. Currently, they use a shared password for all systems, but I'm looking to change this for security reasons. I'm considering a few options for individual logins, including named accounts, barcode scanned logins, or physical authentication methods like security cards. However, each option has its challenges, particularly regarding user management, password forgetfulness, and login speeds. I'm looking for advice on how to best implement secure logins while keeping the process manageable for the staff. What have you found works best in similar environments?

We've had success using ruggedized Windows tablets with a single account per site. Everyone uses a Windows PIN to log in, and only IT knows the real password. As we grow, we plan to transition to giving each user their own email accounts and unique logins to improve security further.
If you have Active Directory Certificate Services, using GIDS cards for Windows Logon can streamline the process. Users can set a PIN for their cards, and once the card isn't in the reader, they're logged out automatically, which enhances security while still letting multiple logins occur.
Each of my team members has their own login and password. It helps them take responsibility for their usage. The effectiveness of this method does depend on how strict your security requirements are.
Have you considered using Chrome books? They could simplify things for you.
You might want to implement physical authentication methods, like CAC cards or YubiKeys. But keep in mind that without the right administrative policies, people might still find ways around these systems. A technical solution coupled with strict policies could improve accountability.
