I recently got my own internet service with Verizon after my mother switched our home connection to T-Mobile, which has been really disappointing for gaming. I received my Verizon router today but noticed that her T-Mobile router is already using the only available Ethernet port on the modem in the living room. I'm unsure if I need to buy a splitter or switch, or if I require a separate modem for my new ISP. Do I need a technician to come out, or can I do this myself? Any help on how to get my connection up and running smoothly would be appreciated, as I'm not very savvy with networking.

It sounds like there's some confusion here. You can't just plug your Verizon router into your mom's T-Mobile modem. You need to fully disconnect her modem first. If it's using coax, make sure to check with Verizon on the setup instructions. They might have sent their modem with instructions for your specific connection.
You're right that the T-Mobile modem just needs power since it runs on cellular. If that's not working for you, look for the fiber or coax line that comes into your home and connect your new modem to that instead. It might help with your internet speeds.
You'll need your own modem for Verizon, as you can’t connect two different ISPs to the same modem. Just get a separate box and you should be good to go!
