Hey everyone! I'm managing licenses for 86 users in M365 and it's getting pretty hectic. Currently, I'm assigning licenses directly to each user, but I'm thinking it would be much cleaner to organize them into security groups. I want to create a 'base license' group that includes essentials like MS E3, Teams, Entra P2, Defender P2, and Intune, along with other groups for specific tools like Visio and Visual Studio. I'm wondering if this approach will help streamline the management process. Are there better methods or best practices to improve license assignment management? Also, I've noticed tools like CIPP out there, but switching to those seems like a whole project. If anyone has experience with this, your suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

This is how I handle M365 licenses! I just throw users into the relevant groups like Lic-M365-E3 and keep it super simple. The only important thing is ensuring you have enough licenses in each group to meet user needs.
Definitely, using groups is a smart way to go! Managing permissions through groups instead of assigning licenses to each user individually can really cut down on the admin hassle. You can delegate management tasks without giving portal access and it makes automating tasks a breeze. Just keep in mind that if you're syncing through AADConnect, updates might take up to 30 minutes to reflect, but that's generally manageable.
We transitioned to security groups recently and it’s been such a relief! It simplifies auditing and managing licenses immensely. Just be cautious about the number of licenses you have available; I’ve seen issues arise from overcommitting and that can seriously mess up automated assignments.
