How to Stop Windows from Reinstalling Old Ethernet Drivers?

I recently built a new PC using a Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX motherboard paired with a 9800X3D CPU and installed Windows 11 Pro. I noticed that my Ethernet connection was limited to 100/100 speed due to Windows installing a subpar driver. To resolve this, I downloaded the latest LAN driver from Gigabyte's website, which fixed the issue temporarily by giving me 1000/1000 speed. However, Windows keeps reverting to the old driver after some time, which forces my speed back down to 100/100. I've attempted several solutions, including adjusting Group Policy settings to prevent Windows from updating drivers, rolling back the driver from Device Manager, and manually forcing settings in Device Manager, but nothing seems to work. I've also checked the latest chipset drivers and tried different versions of the Ethernet driver from Gigabyte, but the problem persists. Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like a frustrating issue! Have you checked if there's a BIOS update for your motherboard? Some users have had success after fully updating the BIOS, which can help prevent Windows from automatically installing drivers. Also, make sure to look for settings in the BIOS concerning driver installations, those might be linked to your problem.

I checked the BIOS and it seems I'm already on the latest version. I'll dig through the settings for anything related to driver updates, though. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, sometimes manufacturers include options in their BIOS that can be hidden. It’s worth looking into!

You might want to use the Microsoft tool called wushowhide.diagcab. After installing your network drivers, run this tool to hide the problematic update that keeps getting reinstalled. This should prevent Windows from replacing your Gigabyte driver and keep your connection at 1000/1000 speed.

Gotcha! It sounds like your driver numbers are different, which might be why Windows keeps reverting back. If the issue persists, check if there’s an option in the Gigabyte utilities to disable any automatic driver updates. Sometimes these utilities can interfere with Windows settings.

I found an option in the BIOS called Gigabyte Utilities Downloader. I've now disabled it to see if that fixes the problem, thanks!
