How to Transition from Helpdesk to a Cloud Engineering Career?

Hi there! I'm currently working in an IT Helpdesk/Endpoint support role and I'm looking to move into a position as a System Administrator or Azure-focused Cloud Engineer. I've got some experience with tools like Microsoft Intune, Azure AD, and a bit of app packaging and automation under my belt. I'm also studying for the AZ-900 certification. My goal is to make the leap from being endpoint-focused to a more infrastructure and cloud-focused role. I want to become skilled in Azure infrastructure, identity management, networking, and automation, with the end goal of becoming a Cloud SysAdmin or Cloud Engineer. I've got a few questions for anyone who has made a similar transition: 1) What should I focus on first if starting from Helpdesk? 2) What skills differentiate Helpdesk support from System Engineers? 3) Should I prioritize the AZ-104 certification or dive deeper into networking first? 4) How important is scripting knowledge (like PowerShell or Python) at this point? 5) What practical projects could I set up in a home lab to build my experience? I can dedicate about 10-15 hours a week to studying. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Scripting is crucial, especially if you're working with Windows and O365 environments. PowerShell will come in handy for daily tasks, while Python might be less needed unless you're dealing with Linux. Getting comfortable with Azure enterprise applications and permissions can give you an edge, especially if your company prioritizes Azure over AWS. Just start small and build your skills gradually.

Aside from networking knowledge, I'd suggest diving into Azure Policy. Mastering it can save you a lot of effort in the long run. While you might find some value in AZ-900, I'd say don't spend money on it; your helpdesk experience already has great value. Instead, look at the AZ-104 material as a guide for self-study—it's a solid roadmap. Free resources like Microsoft Learn and YouTube tutorials are also great. Once you’re more comfortable, consider learning Infrastructure as Code like Terraform or Bicep, as those will become super valuable down the line once you dive into the Cloud Engineer path.

Transitioning from Helpdesk to a more advanced role is a big step! I'd recommend starting with the AZ-900 if you're not super familiar with Azure—it gives you a good foundation. Even though the AZ-104 is more advanced, it might be tough without extensive Azure experience first. As for projects, try creating your own Azure account and spin up different resources. Use smaller instances to keep costs down and document everything in GitHub.
