How to Transition to DevOps from Development?

Hey everyone, I'm feeling a bit lost about switching careers. I have around four years of experience as a Software Developer, mainly focusing on backend development. Initially, I interned in a DevOps role where I got hands-on with Kubernetes, Docker, and Ansible, which I really enjoyed. However, after several years in development, I've realized I dislike coding and typically only return to it out of necessity. I took some steps to improve my employability, like earning my CKA and CKAD certifications, but I've learned that real-world experience often matters more than certificates in this field. I'm even willing to take a significant pay cut to break into DevOps, but I'm unsure how to move forward. Plus, I have some knowledge of Terraform, which I hope could help. Any advice?

If you're not keen on coding all day, don't worry! The demand for coding in DevOps can vary a lot. Some roles focus more on scripting and automation without requiring heavy development skills. From what I’ve seen in the UK, there are plenty of DevOps jobs that involve minimal coding. If you want to steer away from code as much as possible, consider doing projects that highlight your skills with Kubernetes and Docker. It can really help you stand out when applying for junior positions.

That's true! Mainly, it often involves managing configurations and writing deployment files, which is different from full-on software development. I’d suggest building a project, like a self-hosted observability stack, to showcase your skills. It’s a great way to learn and something you can demonstrate to potential employers.
