I Think I Fried My First PC Build – What Can I Do?

Hey everyone, I'm really upset right now. I just completed my first PC build, and everything was working until I tried connecting the fans. I thought I found the right pins for their RGB connections, but when I plugged it in, I saw a wire glow red instantly. I quickly turned everything off, but now the three-part fan is fried, and it seems like I've melted some other components as well. I'm worried that my motherboard or power supply might be damaged since it doesn't turn on at all now. Is there any hope for salvaging parts, or did I just lose everything? I'm feeling really devastated over this—after saving for months, it hurts to think I might have wrecked my setup. Also, it smells like burnt plastic in my house. Anyone have advice on what to do next?

I feel your pain! When I built my second PC, I accidentally installed the motherboard without standoffs and it shorted out. It's a huge bummer. For now, try disconnecting the fan and see if your PC powers on. If it does, you might just have to replace the fan and ideally check the motherboard extensively for any scorch marks.

Good call! Also, let everything sit for a bit to discharge. You don’t want to risk anything when you try to power it back up.

I went through something similar, and it sucks! If the fans are dead, there could still be a chance the GPU, CPU, and RAM survived. Check around the headers on the motherboard for scorch marks. If there are any, it's likely damaged. If the PSU protected your system, that’s good news! Maybe try swapping it out with a different one to see if that helps.

It sounds like you accidentally plugged a 5V RGB fan into a 12V header, which definitely isn't good news for the fans. There's a chance your motherboard could still be okay, though. Make sure to disconnect everything and check for any obvious signs of damage on the board. Can you upload some photos so we can help you troubleshoot?

Be careful with the wires too! Always handle connections when the power's off and unplugged from the wall.

Honestly, don’t sweat it too much! Sure, the fans are fried, but it's not the end of the world. Just let everything cool down, and remember to read your manuals next time! It's a hard lesson to learn, but you'll get the hang of PC building soon enough.
