Is 142 Power On Hours for a New NAS Drive Too High?

Hey everyone,

I just got my first NAS set up and purchased two WD Red Plus 8 TB drives from Amazon. They arrived today, and I was excited to check them out. However, when I used CrystalDiskInfo, I noticed that one of the drives has had 142 Power On Hours, even though the Power On Count is only 4.

This seems like a lot of hours for a brand new drive, suggesting it's been running for almost 6 days. Should I be concerned about that, or is it okay to go ahead and use it in my NAS?

It's a little higher than expected for a new drive, but it's not necessarily a dealbreaker. As long as you don’t see any reallocated sectors in the S.M.A.R.T. data, it should be fine to use. Just keep an eye on it for any unusual signs down the road.

I totally get the concern! It’s good that you’re checking. If it says ‘brand new’ everywhere and the S.M.A.R.T. values are okay, you should be alright. But if you suspect it’s a returned item, returning might give you peace of mind.

Yeah, honestly, while the hours might seem excessive, it's not uncommon for drives to be in transit or tested before sale. Just check the S.M.A.R.T. values, and if all looks good, you shouldn’t worry too much. It’s always worth monitoring after installation.

Are you absolutely sure it wasn’t listed as used? Amazon sometimes sells returns as new if they don’t have stock. If you’re feeling uneasy, returning it might be a good call.
