Is 16GB of VRAM Sufficient for Gaming Over the Next Few Years?

Hey everyone! I've been using the same PC for about seven years and typically play games at 1080p with low settings. Recently, I've struggled to run newer titles like Jedi Survivor and God of War: Ragnarok. Considering the rising costs of RAM and graphics cards, I've decided to build a new PC. I received a government cheque for around 200 euros that helps offset the price increases for parts. Here are my planned specs: a 5070 Ti GPU, a Ryzen 9800X3D CPU, and 32GB of RAM.

My main concern is the longevity of this build. I've heard that 16GB of VRAM is considered borderline for the latest games. Should I return the 5070 Ti and look for a used 4090 with higher VRAM for better longevity, even though it would cost me more? Or is 16GB enough as is? Should I just wait for the next generation of GPUs and upgrade then? I've never used ray tracing and I can't remember the last time I even played on high or ultra settings. Do you think this setup is good enough for 1440p gaming at high textures for the next five years?

In this day and age, 16GB VRAM is still a strong choice. Sure, it might be on the lower end in a few years, but it's still plenty for the majority of games. Just keep an eye on what games you’re playing and adjust your settings as necessary.

Totally agree! It’s all about finding the balance with settings that fit your gaming style.

Honestly, if you're set on gaming at 1440p and you're not diving into ray tracing and such, 16GB will hold up for quite a while. I’d say stick with your plan. But if you eventually want to dabble in higher resolutions or ray tracing, you might look into an upgrade down the line.

Yeah, and with DLSS tech improving, you can often get by just fine even with a lower VRAM card. Stick with your 5070 Ti!

Honestly, 16GB of VRAM should be just fine for 1440p high settings for the next five years. You're definitely overthinking it! Your 5070 Ti is more than capable of handling most games at that resolution, and moving to a used 4090 just to get more VRAM might not be worth the cost. You'd likely just be fine with what you have.

Agreed! Most games won’t even fully utilize 16GB of VRAM unless you're playing at ultra settings on 4K. Stick with your build and save your money!

Most modern games really don’t need more than 16GB of VRAM right now. Even at 4K settings, only the most demanding titles push past that. For 1440p, your setup is solid. I personally think it’ll handle anything you throw at it in the next few years.

True! I’ve seen games lately that can run smoothly even under high loads at lower VRAM. Just tweak some settings, and you're good to go!

You got 12GB? That's fine for literally almost all games out there. Sure, some demanding titles may scratch the surface, but you can usually adjust settings to get them to run smoothly. Future games probably won't lock out players with 12GB unless we hit that extreme threshold.

Exactly! The idea that all future games will require 16GB to run smoothly is overkill. Most of us can still play fine with 12GB without any issues.
