Is 8GB of RAM Enough for Casual Browsing and 4K Streaming?

I'm considering a setup with a CPU like the 5600G or 8700G, but I'm worried about RAM. With the prices being so high right now, I'm stuck on whether 8GB will suffice for my needs. I'm mainly looking at casual browsing with lots of tabs open, as well as streaming 4K YouTube videos and movies. Gaming isn't on the agenda for me. Will it work or am I asking for trouble?

I would say no, 8GB won’t cut it if you're planning on having a lot of tabs open. Windows demands a lot on its own, so you'll quickly run into issues. You really want at least 16GB for a smoother experience, especially in today's environment.

If you go with Linux, 8GB will be more than enough, but if you're on Windows, you might struggle. I've had both setups and found Linux to handle it better with less RAM.

Right? I've found the same thing! Windows just sucks up resources like crazy.

Honestly, I'd suggest going for more if you can. 8GB is just about the minimum, and if your activities ramp up even a little, you'll definitely notice the strain. A mini PC could be a good option for better price-to-performance with more memory.

You'll likely be okay for casual use, though be prepared for some slowdowns. With heavy browsing and multiple tabs, you'll hit a limit, and there could be some performance hiccups. Just keep your expectations reasonable, and you should be able to manage it.

That's true! It might work for now, but I wouldn't be surprised if it starts to feel sluggish with too many tabs open.

It's tough with 8GB these days. I have an older laptop with 12GB, and as long as I don't overwhelm it with tabs, it handles office tasks just fine. If you can swing 16GB in the future when prices drop, that would be a much better bet for casual browsing and streaming.

That's solid advice! Waiting to upgrade might be the way to go.
