Is a 1000W PSU Necessary for My Upgrade to i9 14000k?

I'm currently using an i5 13600k with a 5060ti and 16GB of RAM, powered by a Corsair 650W fully modular PSU. I'm thinking about upgrading to an i9 14000k soon, and I'm trying to decide whether I should go for a 1000W PSU or if an 850W would suffice. I've heard the newer CPUs can consume a lot of power, and since I stream and play games at high settings, I want to make sure my PSU can handle it. What do you recommend?

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend the i9 14000k. I've heard that they tend to have a shorter lifespan. The power draw on those can be pretty intense!

Can you share any recent examples of those failures?

Yeah, I've seen reports about early failures too.

You shouldn’t have to worry too much with an 850W PSU. Your current GPU isn't that power-hungry. Unless you're planning on upgrading to a more powerful graphics card later, an 850W should handle everything fine.

Just a thought—are you having issues with the performance of your i5? The i5 should be fine for most tasks unless you're engaging in high-end demanding applications. If not, maybe consider if you really need the i9.

A good tip is to use PC Partpicker! They can help you figure out a decent wattage requirement based on your parts.

Thanks, I'll check that out!

850W should be plenty for that setup, especially if you can get a 1000W on sale. Having extra wattage can lead to a quieter build since the PSU won't have to work as hard.

You definitely don’t need a 1000W for your current setup. That's mainly for people who run high-end cards like the 5090. An 850W will serve you well unless you're pushing for extreme overclocks.
