Is a 1200W Power Supply Too Much for My Gaming Build?

Asked By GamerGal34 On

I'm building a gaming PC with an AMD Ryzen 7800X3D CPU and a 9070 XT GPU. I found the Montech Century II 1200W power supply on sale for a lower price compared to the 850W and 1050W units. I know that 1200W might be more than I need, but are there any downsides to going with it? Should I stick to an 850W or 1000W instead?

If it's cheaper, I don't see a reason to not go for the 1200W. Sure, it's overkill, but that's not a bad thing in this case. Future-proofing can be a huge bonus!

Totally agree! Plus, the 1200W models can have better efficiency ratings.

The main downside could be slightly less efficiency when you're not using much power. If you're using only a fraction of that wattage while gaming, it won’t be at its most efficient. But if it’s cheaper, why not?

Yeah, if the difference is small, it seems worth it to me!

Definitely do some research on the Montech first. Bigger numbers are great, but if it has issues, it’s not worth it. Some people might say it’s overkill, but if it's reliable, that’s the main point.

Good call! I always check reviews before buying a PSU.

I went for a 1200W PSU too! For me, it was actually cheaper than the 1000W, and I love having that extra headroom, especially for future upgrades. It can also go into zero fan mode when not much power is being used, so it's super quiet!

Same here! It's nice to future-proof without breaking the bank.
