Is a 3-Node OpenShift Cluster Worth the Investment?

I'm considering implementing a 3-node OpenShift cluster for our infrastructure team, and I want to establish namespace-based isolation for test and production environments. The cost is around $80k for 8-5 support. Are there any major concerns I should be aware of, or am I just overthinking the scale of this setup? Each of the 3 nodes will serve as both control plane and worker nodes, which seems minimal to me.

From my experience, the interface and curated installs with OpenShift can be worth it. Have a chat with your vendor about getting access to Techzone—you can spin up a test instance and check out how everything works first-hand.

OpenShift can be resource-heavy, especially with just 3 nodes, which might limit your performance depending on your workloads. Just keep that in mind as you plan everything out.

While there are valid reasons to use OpenShift, it often depends on specific requirements. If you're going with a hyper-converged setup, just remember it's best to separate control plane nodes if you can, especially if you're not working with additional hardware. Watch out for operator management challenges in a single cluster; it's a gamble without more isolation!

Three nodes is pushing it a bit. You might want to consider the cost-benefit of having two separate 3-node clusters instead to maintain better isolation between staging and production.
