Is a Computer Science Degree Worth It?

I've been hearing mixed opinions about pursuing a computer science degree. Some friends and family believe it's not worth the investment of time and money, often joking that CS grads end up with low-paying jobs like at fast food places. However, I am really interested in technology and have already taught myself Python and Java, aiming for a career in software engineering. Can anyone help clarify if going down this path is a good decision?

Having a CS degree can definitely open doors. In my experience, degrees in computer science allow you to transition beyond just coding into roles like systems architect, where you’re influencing designs and solving complex problems. While it’s not a guarantee, many senior roles tend to be filled by those with advanced degrees or relevant experience.

It's tough to predict your future in this field, but I've had a rewarding experience. After many years, I got lucky with a startup that made me quite wealthy. My son saw similar success with tech opportunities, but remember it's not all about the money. Make sure to find something you enjoy, or you might end up very unhappy.

True! People often ignore that if you're only chasing money, you'll likely burn out and regret your choices because of stress.

Right, but we can't ignore that making a decent income is also important. It’s about finding a balance!

The most important thing is whether you enjoy computer science. If you have a passion for it, you'll be motivated to keep learning the skills you need for your career. A lot of people fail because they think it’s an easy path to high-paying jobs and don’t realize the hard work involved. Real success often comes from those who truly live and breathe the field, having projects and side work that build their experience. So, if it excites you, definitely pursue it!

Sure, the tech landscape is always changing, but there will always be a demand for skilled tech professionals. As long as you adapt and learn continuously, a computer science degree could be very beneficial. Anyone claiming that it’s pointless is probably not taking the field seriously. If you love programming and technology, go for it!

Do some research based on your local job market! Don’t take everything you see in memes seriously. Getting a degree can give you an edge, even if it’s not strictly necessary for all jobs in programming. It's also about the skills you gain along the way.
