Is a Skill Assessment Exam Worth It?

Hey everyone! I just completed a tech interview with a company and they're asking me to go through a two-hour skill assessment exam on a coding platform. This exam sounds tough since it involves multiple questions and coding challenges on various topics. They're specifically mentioning scenarios related to cloud computing, challenges with Docker and Docker Compose, writing a Kubernetes deployment from scratch, Terraform, and possibly some CloudFormation or CDK topics. The kicker? No external resources allowed—no Google, no documentation, and no AI tools like GPT. Everything has to come from my own memory! I'm feeling a bit uncertain about taking on this challenge. What do you all think? Would you be up for it?

Honestly, I’d say hard pass on this one, especially for Terraform-related tasks. The providers change so frequently that trying to write something functional without any references would be really tough, if not impossible. It sounds more like a setup for failure than an actual assessment.

I can relate! I had a similar experience recently with Terraform and it was overwhelming to try to learn everything in such a short time. Not sure I want to work for a company using Terraform either after that!

Not being allowed to use documentation feels a bit out of touch for a skill assessment. Writing a Kubernetes deployment from memory isn't easy—there are just so many variables to think about! That said, I wouldn't take it too seriously. It's all about how desperate you are for a job in your field. If you’re not investing much to take this interview, it might still be worth it just for the practice and experience!

I agree, I think I would still consider doing it just to see what the experience is like, even though it sounds pretty intense.
