Is an HDD with SSD caching a good budget-friendly storage solution?

I recently got a used computer for my niece, but it only has a 512 GB SSD, which she quickly filled up with games. Now, SSD prices are rising, and I'm not able to find a reasonably priced one to expand her storage. I'm considering getting her a 2TB or 4TB HDD and using part of the existing SSD as a cache. Would this setup work, or will it slow her down too much? I'm trying to keep the costs under $100 and would appreciate any suggestions, including used drive options if they are feasible.

Using an HDD in combination with the SSD won't feel as snappy as a full SSD, especially for gaming. I'd recommend keeping the OS and the most-played games on the SSD, and using a 2TB HDD just for larger files and less frequently used games. This way, she won't really notice any slowdown—she'll experience it mostly with games that run directly off the HDD.

I get that, but I’d want to use caching software if possible. I'm sure she'd insist on all the games being 'main' games since she’s 12.
