Is an SSD heatsink really necessary?

Hey everyone! I recently built a computer with a Gigabyte 850B Zifi6E motherboard and I'm using an SP UD 90 1TB SSD. My motherboard didn't come with an SSD heatsink, and I'm wondering if I should get one or if it's not really necessary. Any advice would be appreciated!

You’re not required to get one, but a heatsink can help with performance and longevity. If you're planning on heavy usage, it's a good idea.

Honestly, you probably don't need a heatsink unless you're transferring really large files for extended periods. Otherwise, your SSD should be fine without it.

If your SSD starts to get hot, it will throttle to prevent damage, usually keeping below 70 degrees under regular use. If you’re moving large files and it hits 90 or above, I’d recommend adding a heatsink—something affordable with good airflow should work. Just monitor the temps with a tool like HWinfo64 to see if you need it.

While it's not essential, heatsinks are pretty cheap—typically ranging from a few bucks to about $10. Brands like Thermalright and Arctic make decent ones. If you want something low-profile, a copper graphene heatsink could work well for your setup.
