I've been noticing some major fluctuations in DNS responses from root servers and SOAs for various domain names since 9 AM CST today. It's really hit or miss. Is there something larger going on with DNS propagation?

What’s your issue with querying root servers directly? It’s completely valid for troubleshooting. If errors are surfacing, checking there is a good way to pinpoint problems.
It sounds like you might not be able to get responses for specific records. Did you make any DNS changes recently that could be taking a while to propagate?
I heard the same from my coworker who had problems with CNAME records. Network Solutions admitted to a nameserver propagation issue, but it’s crazy they don’t have a status page for such a big DNS provider!
Yeah, there's definitely a problem on Network Solutions' end. I just talked to their support, and they confirmed ongoing DNS issues for at least the last 12-18 hours. Their DNS entries are valid, but they’re taking forever to propagate to other servers. If you're doing an nslookup against popular DNS servers like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.4.4, you might face timeouts or invalid responses initially, but they seem to become valid after several retries. You can check propagation status using services like WhatsMyDNS.net too.
Make sure you're querying the right servers. If your hints file is out-of-date, that could cause issues too. Not all root servers handle every TLD.
