This morning, my WSUS server went totally haywire, utilizing 100% of the CPU and hogging 16 GB of RAM. I had to kill IIS just to regain control. Upon checking the sync logs, I found an overwhelming number of new patches trying to download right after midnight, which resulted in failed sync attempts.
After a reboot, the server quickly spiked back to 100% usage again. I even had to set up a firewall rule to block port 8530 just to make the server usable. This WSUS server has been running for over a year without issues thanks to a maintenance script. I'm curious if anyone else has dealt with similar problems or if there's something wrong specifically with my setup.
PS: After disabling access on port 8530, I managed to perform a normal sync, and everything seemed fine. But once I reopened the traffic, it immediately shot back up to 100%. I'm at a loss here!

No issues here, our WSUS is running smoothly. Maybe it’s a specific update or a configuration issue with your server that’s causing it to spazz out.
It sounds like your WSUS server could use more frequent patching. Beyond maintaining scripts, regular updates can help prevent issues like this. I've seen servers struggle when they miss a lot of updates for too long.
Yeah, but sometimes it's just necessary to keep the headaches at bay!

But what's the excitement in that? It’s more fun to troubleshoot, right?
