Is Arch Linux a Good Start for a Casual User?

I'm currently a casual Windows 11 user, mostly gaming and doing some simple video editing and photo editing. I've played around with software like DaVinci Resolve and GIMP, but I switched to using cracked versions of Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop instead. After doing a bit of research, I'm tempted to dive into Linux, particularly Arch, because of its customization options. I plan to keep Windows for programs that don't work with solutions like Wine or Bottles. This would be my first serious installation of Linux, barring a recent attempt with Linux Mint on an old Windows 7 laptop. I have a few questions: Can I expect my cracked games to run well with Proton or Bottles? Is relying on forums and GPTs for command guidance sufficient? Additionally, for mods that use DLL injection, will I be able to get those to work or find alternatives? I'd really appreciate hearing from experienced Linux users to avoid any rookie mistakes.

Some of the more straightforward cracked games will likely work with Proton or Bottles. Just keep in mind that heavily protected games with anti-cheat software might give you trouble. And as for mods that involve DLL injection, sure, you can find workarounds to get most of those to work on Linux, but it can require some tweaking on your part. So be prepared for that!

Yeah, it can be tricky! Often the mod may need specific instructions that might not be available for Linux users. But if you can manually configure settings and files, you're in better shape.

Just go with Linux Mint for now. It’s way more user-friendly for beginners. Once you get the hang of it, you can consider trying Arch if you still want to. Trust me, you'll save yourself a lot of headaches this way!

Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend Arch for a first-timer. Arch is really aimed at users who already know their way around Linux. There are plenty of easier distributions out there that can still offer tons of customization. If you're eager to play with Arch, maybe try it out in a virtual machine first before risking your main setup.

You'll find that many Linux distros allow for plenty of customization, not just Arch. If your focus is gaming and productivity, make sure to research what works best for that. As for using Wine or Proton, most games without anti-cheat systems are fine, but you're just going to have to experiment a bit with setup!

Starting with Arch isn't out of the question, but I'd recommend catching up with some easier distributions first. There's no harm in trying Arch later when you're more comfortable. Meanwhile, check out something like Fedora or Kubuntu with KDE; they offer good gaming support and are much more straightforward to use.
