Hey everyone! I recently inherited a gaming PC from my cousin, who upgraded to something more powerful. Normally, I'm a Mac user and not a fan of Windows. I've only dabbled in Linux on some old machines. Now I'm considering switching to Bazzite and need some feedback on my hardware compatibility. Here are my specs: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-11600KF @ 3.90GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (12GB), and 16GB of RAM.
I've heard mixed reviews regarding NVIDIA's performance on Bazzite, so I wanted to get the community's perspective. I also play games with anti-cheat systems but I'm open to dropping them if that means I can avoid Windows, as I mostly enjoy story-driven games. Can anyone explain how to get games to work with Proton? I've read about it but I'm a bit lost on the details. I'm quite new to Linux and would really appreciate your guidance! Thanks!

If you're starting fresh, you might want to consider Linux Mint. It’s user-friendly and should work fine with your setup. Once you get comfortable, you can switch to a more specialized gaming distro. Of course, make sure you know that Mint doesn’t offer anything special for gaming, so the simpler the setup, the better for a newcomer!
Bazzite is designed as a gaming alternative to SteamOS and it does have a desktop mode, so it should work fine. There are also other distributions like Pop!_OS, CachyOS, and Garuda that are great for gaming. Many people say Pop!_OS has the best NVIDIA support since it's maintained by System76, who build computers with NVIDIA hardware. I personally use Garuda, which is Arch-based. It's packed with everything you need for gaming right out of the box; I logged in, opened Steam, added my game directory, and it worked! Just keep in mind, you'll occasionally have manual updates, but that’s pretty rare. Do your research and weigh everyone's opinions carefully.
I've been using Bazzite, and it's really transformed my gaming experience. I used to use my computer mainly for watching videos, but now it’s straight to gaming, and I've completed tons of games within the past month. I haven’t used NVIDIA cards, unfortunately, but the overall experience has been great.
I'd suggest trying Bazzite Gnome or Fedora Gnome since they have a look that's pretty close to macOS. As a former Mac user myself, I really like Pop!_OS for its macOS-like feel and extra improvements, like window tiling. It’s worth noting that the new version of Pop!_OS is currently in alpha while the stable version is a bit older but super reliable with NVIDIA drivers already included.
