Is Building a Homelab Worth It After My Internship in DevOps?

Hi everyone! I just wrapped up an internship in the DevOps and cloud space, where I got hands-on experience with tools like GKE, Terraform, and Terragrunt. I'm now considering whether it's a good idea to invest in building a homelab for further learning. Do you think it's worth the investment? If so, what kind of budget should I anticipate?

Honestly, you might not need to build a homelab right away. You can use free tiers on cloud services like GCP or AWS for learning Kubernetes without spending a dime. Minikube or kind are great options to start learning affordably.

If you're someone who loves tinkering, figuring things out, and exploring cool tech, then definitely go for it! But if you’re not really into setting up and troubleshooting stuff, it might not be the best use of your time. Personally, I started my homelab just to play around with Proxmox, and it morphed into a setup for DNS and LDAP because I needed it. So, find something that either excites you or that you can really use day-to-day.

If you're focused on Kubernetes, I'd suggest checking out Kode Kloud labs. Setting up a local Kubernetes cluster can be a hassle. Instead, consider using something lightweight like k3s, which is easier to manage. You can pick up an old OptiPlex with an i5, 32GB of RAM, and a terabyte of storage for about $200. It’s a solid investment!
