Is CachyOS a Good Choice for a Beginner Linux User?

I've been exploring my options for a Linux distribution, especially since I'm on a laptop with an NVIDIA GPU. I'm really drawn to the customization potential of KDE Plasma and have read that CachyOS might be a more beginner-friendly Arch-based option. However, I'm also considering Mint and Fedora, both of which supposedly offer stability and KDE support. I'd like to hear your thoughts on which distribution would be the best fit for me, given my willingness to troubleshoot and learn but preference for a smoother experience.

Definitely consider PikaOS as well! It’s a good option for new users looking for something based on Arch with better support for NVIDIA drivers.

CachyOS is indeed a solid choice for beginners, especially if you're looking for something that works well out of the box. It offers decent performance and is more user-friendly compared to standard Arch. Mint could be a good alternative, but you’ll need to install NVIDIA drivers after setup, and keep in mind that it ships an outdated version of KDE. If you’re fine with a rolling release, CachyOS is great. For a touch more stability, consider Fedora, Nobara, or PikaOS. Ultimately, it depends on how much you value stability vs. cutting-edge features.

If you really want to dive into something like Arch while keeping an eye on stability, I'd suggest looking into openSUSE Tumbleweed instead of CachyOS. It's rolling but usually has solid stability, and it supports KDE well.

I switched to CachyOS a couple of weeks ago and ran into a lot of initial setup issues. Most of that was due to the window manager I chose rather than Cachy itself. As long as you avoid the steep learning curve of picking certain setups right away, you should have a smoother experience. Plus, CachyOS comes with most of what you might need already included.

CachyOS is a good beginner-friendly option, especially since the team maintains quality over its Arch base. If you're willing to read and solve problems as they come up, you should be fine. Plus, going with Btrfs and GRUB can help you with snapshotting and recovery, which is handy for new users.
