Is Computer Science the Right Path for Me?

Hey everyone, I'm a recent high school grad and I'm feeling a bit lost about my next steps. I'm considering studying Computer Science because I've heard it's a hot field, especially in the UAE where I live. But here's the thing: I don't have any real passion for a specific area, and I don't have much experience with computers—I've never even owned one! I did watch some tutorial videos on Python recently, trying to dip my toes in, but I know that's just scratching the surface. I'm concerned about a few things: What if I dive into this only to realize it's not for me? What if I struggle with the material or find it boring? Plus, even after graduating, can I compete in the job market? Can I handle a job that requires me to sit alone with a screen for long hours? I'm really confused, and I need some advice. Any thoughts from people who know a bit about Computer Science would be super helpful!

You mentioned living in the UAE, which might offer some flexibility in your education. If your school allows it, consider choosing a major that includes both Computer Science and something broader, like management. Skills in programming can benefit any office job. Even if you don’t code full-time, knowing how to write a script for office workflows can be super handy. With AI doing more coding, understanding how to analyze and improve existing code is just as important. Keep in mind, programming is about solving problems and collaborating more than just sitting in front of a screen all day. If that sounds appealing, go for it!

What do you mean by needing to automate? Why is that important?

Here are some steps I recommend you consider: first, get a laptop. You don’t need to spend a fortune; just anything with at least 4GB of RAM will work fine. This way, you can explore programming further, no matter what you decide later. Second, look into free bootcamps like FreeCodeCamp. These will give you a taste of the actual work people do in tech without any commitment. It’ll help you figure out if coding is something you enjoy or not.

Thanks for the tips! I’ll definitely check out FreeCodeCamp.
