Is DDR4 RAM Still a Smart Choice for My New PC Build in 2027?

I'm gearing up to build my first PC and my budget only allows for a motherboard and RAM that use DDR4. I'm concerned whether DDR4 will become outdated in the next few years, especially around 2027-2028, since I can't afford a full system upgrade (CPU, motherboard, and RAM) anytime soon. Will DDR4 still be sufficient for what I'll need over the next few years?

While DDR5 is becoming the new standard now, I'd advise checking the motherboard and CPU compatibility. Make sure you're not stuck with an older PCIe 3.0 board; those tend to limit performance more than the RAM type itself.

Honestly, after a few years, your CPU might feel outdated more than your RAM. DDR4 should still be adequate when you compare performance needs versus budget.

Right, I'm just playing casual games now, so I feel like I'll manage fine.

DDR4 is already being phased out, but just like DDR3, it will keep performing well for several years even after DDR5 hits the market. So you should be fine for quite a while!

Yeah, I think a lot of gamers will still be using DDR4 even when newer tech comes out.

If DDR5 is out of your budget, stick with DDR4 for now! But keep an eye on prices, because in some areas, DDR4 still isn't the best value if DDR5 is only a bit more expensive.

In my country, the price gap between DDR4 and DDR5 is quite noticeable, around $100-200 difference.

It really depends on your overall setup. If you're looking at solid CPUs like the 5700X3D or 5800X3D, they will probably hold up well for the next few years, especially with strong GPUs at decent resolutions. But, a Ryzen 5600 might struggle a bit.

I'm also weighing my options between the 5700X and the newer Intel chips like the 13400F. They're around the same price for me.
