Is Gaming on Linux Worth It for Survival Games?

I'm considering making the switch to Linux for gaming and I'm especially interested in how well it handles survival games like Minecraft, Valheim, and The Forest. I also play some games with anti-cheat systems such as Dead by Daylight, Elden Ring, and PUBG. Will these games run smoothly on Linux?

If you're new to Linux, I'd suggest checking out the Bazzite distro. It's beginner-friendly and focused on gaming. The nice thing about Linux is that you can try different distributions and find what fits you best, so don’t feel like you have to stick with just one.

Before making the leap, definitely check if your games are compatible! For Steam titles, you can use ProtonDB.com to see how they perform (look for Gold, Platinum, or Native ratings). For multiplayer games with anti-cheats, AreWeAntiCheatYet.com is a great resource. I know PUBG has some issues while Dead by Daylight seems to work just fine.

If you're unsure about diving fully into Linux, consider getting a second SSD. That way, you can keep Windows and test Linux without worrying about partitioning. As for distributions, Mint is solid for many users, but if you're primarily gaming, consider something like Bazzite or a distro with KDE since it offers great performance and is more up to date.

I’ve been gaming on Ubuntu Cinnamon for about nine months now and I've had a mostly smooth experience, but there are times when you have to tweak settings. The ProtonDB is super helpful for figuring out game compatibility, so definitely check that out! Just know that you might encounter some hiccups, but that's part of the Linux journey.

Honestly, the gaming experience can vary a lot. Some games behave well while others don't, especially with anti-cheats involved. If you're not comfortable checking compatibility on your own, sticking with Windows might be the safest bet to avoid any issues. Just keeping things real! Plus, Linux isn't as intimidating as it seems; it's more about getting used to it!

It's a bit of a mixed bag depending on the game. Definitely check out ProtonDB for compatibility issues. For instance, it seems like PUBG won’t work great because of its anti-cheat, but many others should perform well. If you're considering distributions, Pop! OS is often recommended over Mint for gaming due to better Nvidia driver support. Also, don't shy away from experimenting with distros like Nobara or Chimera if you want something different.
