Hey everyone! I'm a college freshman and just got a second-hand laptop with 512 GB of storage and 6 GB of RAM, powered by an Nvidia T1000 GPU and an Intel i7 processor. I recently watched some videos that got me really inspired to switch to Linux, specifically Mint. Since I can't totally commit to Linux because of my college work, I'm considering a dual boot setup. However, I can't do a dual drive boot due to the cost of a battery replacement and additional drive installation, which is around $200. So, I'm thinking about allocating 200 GB for Linux Mint instead. I'm also trying to learn programming languages like C, C++, Java, and Python. My main concerns are whether I can run these programming languages smoothly on Mint, if I should even install Linux given my storage situation, and how it will impact my gaming since I play Valorant and League of Legends. Apologies for my English, and thanks for any advice!

If you feel motivated to try Linux, go for it! Just think about what you want to accomplish with it. If it aligns with your college goals, then it might be worth the switch. But figure out if it’s what you really want to ensure it’s not just a hassle.
For programming, Linux is generally a better experience compared to Windows. However, you will need to keep your games on Windows since they don’t run on Linux. If you're willing to sacrifice some space, it might be worth uninstalling Valorant and League.
I’m currently dual booting Linux Mint on a laptop with a single SSD, and it works perfectly fine. Just make sure to back up your important files in case anything goes wrong during the setup.
Absolutely, you can run programming languages on Linux Mint without any issues! In fact, many packages rely on Python, and it’s usually pre-installed. However, keep in mind that you can’t play Valorant on Linux because of the anti-cheat measures. If you’re already playing League, it’s better to keep those games on Windows for now.
Got it! Time to ditch Riot’s spyware then.
Yes, you can definitely install and run your programming languages on Mint! It’s a user-friendly and stable version, making it great for beginners like you. Just be mindful that some software requires additional dependencies, but the package manager will help with that.
I heard Windows updates can mess things up. Have you had any issues?
