Is it normal for my 9800X3D CPU to show such high max temperatures?

I just put together a new PC with a 9800X3D CPU and a Phantom Spirit 120 SE cooler. While monitoring the temperatures using HWinfo, I noticed the maximum CPU temperature spiked to 95-97°C, but the real-time temperature was around 70°C while I was gaming. Is this typical, or should I be concerned about a potential issue with my CPU cooler installation? Also, I saw those high temperatures again just by opening Cinebench, without even running the test yet.

A quick spike to 95°C for a second during game load can be normal, but seeing those temps just by opening Cinebench is unusual. You might want to consider reapplying the thermal paste because your cooler mount could be slightly off.

I completely agree. I struggled a bit with my cooler install too, so a repaste sounds like a good move for you.

I've looked into this quite a bit. Many people will tell you those temps are too high or might suggest you check if you removed any protective plastic from the cold plate. I checked all that and it felt like a waste because I found out the only game really pushing my temps was DCS. In regular gaming, my CPU barely goes over 65-70°C. If you dig through the comments, you'll find it’s pretty standard behavior for the 9800X3D. If your games are performing well, it's likely not an issue, but reseating the cooler can't hurt if you want peace of mind.

That's interesting! When you game, do you notice your temps in the 65-70°C range, but do your max temps still hit 95-97°C? That's what’s worrying me.
