I'm a sysadmin in a somewhat rural area with a bunch of old laptops just sitting around that haven't been used in years. I'm curious if I can wipe one of these and install Linux on it for personal exploration during my downtime. I wouldn't take anything from it, and I plan to reinstall the corporate image afterward. Do you think the IT or security team would have a problem with this?

If it’s a spare laptop, I’d say go for it! Just make sure you’re not wiping something that might still be needed. If you can get a clear yes from your team, you should be all good.
If it's just sitting there collecting dust and not being used, wipe it clean! Just keep in mind that it's always better to ask for forgiveness than permission in some cases. Just be ready to explain why you did it if anyone asks.
Consider using a virtual machine or WSL instead. There are ways to work with Linux without wiping anything, and it keeps things above board while you learn.
Honestly, you should probably check with your team lead or manager before diving in. Company policies might not allow it, and you don't want to get in trouble without asking first.
It’s great that you want to learn! But seriously, just ask for permission from your boss. Frame it as wanting to see if you can repurpose the old machines. That way, it shows that you’re being responsible with company property.
Yeah, and who knows? They might even support your learning efforts!
