Is it okay to mix RAM sticks with different capacities?

I currently have a single 8GB RAM stick running at 2666MHz in my PC. With RAM prices going up, I found a good deal on a 2x4GB kit, also at 2666MHz. Is mixing RAM sticks of different capacities or sizes okay, or should I look for something else?

Mixing RAM can lead to a couple of problems: it might force your system to run all sticks at lower speeds, and you might experience stuttering. Ideally, you should try to get an identical kit to what you have for the best performance. However, the 2x4GB setup will work for now.

I think you’re being a bit dramatic. Mixing doesn’t necessarily cause stuttering. It’s all about how well the sticks can work together.

Mixing isn’t ideal, but it’s better than just having a single 8GB stick. Just be aware that it could limit your system's potential a bit.

Mixing RAM can cause differences in benchmarks, but usually, you won't notice a huge difference in daily use. It's fine for most tasks.

It's generally fine to mix RAM of different sizes. I do it myself with a combination of 1x8GB and 2x16GB sticks. You might lose some performance potential, but it’ll work without any major issues.
