I'm planning to build a new computer and really want to use the RTX 5080, preferably the Founders Edition but I'm okay with third-party versions too. The MSRP for it is listed as $999 on Nvidia's website, yet I've seen prices from retailers as high as $1,500! I've noticed all graphics cards seem to be about 50% marked up. Are people just waiting for prices to drop back to normal, or is this situation expected to last a while? What's causing these high prices and low stock? I live near a Microcenter—should I pop in there every few days and hope to snag one?

If you want a Founders Edition, definitely sign up for the Verified Priority Access on Nvidia's site. They have limited stock and usually prioritize their existing account holders. I know someone who waited months for an invite after signing up. It might be worth checking out alerts on Discord too. Usual retailers are running low or high on price.
I've been on the lookout too. Supply has been really tight since the launch. The best price I've come across is about $1,300 on sites like Newegg or Amazon for some of the cheaper third-party options like PNY.
In the U.S., tariffs might be playing a role in these inflated prices. Plus, the RTX 5070 Ti is pretty similar in performance for a lower price. I've seen benchmarks showing only a slight performance difference, which makes the 5080 seem overpriced. You might want to consider the 5070 Ti as a viable option if it's easier to find.
Currently, your best bet for a Founders Edition might be waiting for Nvidia to drop more stock, as they don't produce huge volumes. Otherwise, look at the base models from PNY or MSI starting at around $1,199.
The MSRP of $999 is for the Founders Edition. Typically, the AIB cards go for a bit more; for instance, the ASUS TUF 5080 has an MSRP around $1,375. Remember, MSRP stands for 'Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price', so actual retail prices often differ.

That's a good point! I think I'll give the 5070 Ti more thought now.
