I've just inherited a Dell PowerEdge R540 and while I'm not exactly sure how old it is, it seems to be in working condition. I'm considering deploying the Veeam Hardened Repository ISO on it, planning to add some big 3.5" disks to reach around 70TB and throw in a bit more RAM. So, I'm wondering, is this worth the effort?

There’s definitely still plenty of life in a PowerEdge R540! It's a solid base for a backup solution.
If you’re thinking of using it for a non-production environment, like a home lab or small business, I say go for it! For production-level setups, though, you might face issues if hardware fails. Execs might not be happy if backups fail on an unsupported, out-of-warranty server.
You should check the Dell support site with the service tag. It'll give you insights on the age, original parts, and warranty status. That info can help you make a better decision.

As a secondary repository, it should still do the job, right?
