Is it possible to recover data from a dead SSD?

I have an ASUS laptop (Model: M409D) that my father bought in 2020. Unfortunately, the other day it started booting directly into the BIOS mode, and I couldn't see any options for boot priority. I took it to a local computer shop where they told me the laptop couldn't read the SSD and suggested replacing it with a new one. I even got a second opinion before deciding to install the new SSD. Now, I'm really worried because there's important data on the old SSD. Is there any way to recover my files from it? I'm a first-year student, so I'm on a budget and need to know my options.

Home recovery is tricky since it really depends on whether or not your SSD is physically detected. Did the local shop specify whether they could see the SSD at all? If not, going into professional recovery is probably your best route, but it’s usually pricey. Also, remember, if you try the USB adapter and get it to work, you might only be able to recover files, not programs.

No, they didn't indicate anything about it being detected. I'll try the adapter link and see what happens!

If the SSD isn't being detected at all, your best bet might be to consult a professional data recovery service. They have the tools to recover data from drives that can't be accessed normally. However, if it’s just an issue of the SSD not connecting, it’s worth trying an NVMe SSD to USB adapter. You can pick one up for about $15-$20. Just pop your SSD in that and see if it shows up when plugged into another computer. If it does, you can copy your files, but if it doesn’t recognize the drive, it's likely dead and you'd need to look into recovery services.

Yeah, I agree! Just make sure not to mess with the drive too much before consulting a pro, because you could worsen the problem.
