Is it Possible to Run 3D Software from a USB Drive?

Hey everyone! I'm an oil painter and not super tech-savvy, but I'm getting into 3D modeling to create reference images for my artwork. I wanted to know if I can download and run some 3D software like Blender, Character Creator, and Marvelous Designer on a USB drive (1TB) instead of my computer's hard drive, since my current computer is pretty old and lacks the storage for all the assets I want to download. I won't be moving the USB around among different computers—I'm just trying to save space. Would running these programs off a USB drive slow down their performance significantly? Is there anything I should consider to get this setup working smoothly? By the way, I'm using a Mac.

Running software from a USB drive can definitely slow things down. Even if your USB drive is fast, your overall performance might take a hit, especially on an older computer. You’ll likely experience longer load times and lag when using demanding applications like the ones you mentioned. It could be worth looking into an external SSD that connects via Thunderbolt for better performance if you want to stick with your setup.

If you're mostly using it for reference images, you could consider just installing lighter software that’s more forgiving on older hardware. But be cautious, because running big applications off a regular USB drive could really slow you down.

What kind of Mac do you have? Certain models handle external drives better than others. If it's a MacBook Pro from around 10 years ago, it might be a bit of a struggle with performance, but some external solutions can help.
