Is it possible to use an old laptop HDD in a new desktop build?

Hi everyone! I have this old laptop that's pretty much on its last legs after 15 years, but I really need to access the data on its hard drive. I'm considering building a simple desktop just to recover that information and possibly use the HDD as primary storage. I'd like to keep using the same operating system and files without losing anything. Is this feasible, or should I just accept that my data is lost? Thanks for any advice!

You can totally salvage that data! If the HDD is still working, you can get a USB adapter that connects your laptop's hard drive to any computer via USB. However, since it's over 15 years old, I suggest copying the important files to a new storage device. The old drive might not perform well enough to use as your main OS drive anymore. You can use either a SATA to USB adapter or an enclosure for safer use.

Yes, it's doable! One option is to build your system with an SSD to run your OS and use the HDD as a secondary drive for storage. Alternatively, you could get an external USB enclosure for the HDD, making it a portable drive. Just keep in mind that HDDs are generally slower than SSDs.

Your laptop HDD just needs a SATA power and connection to the motherboard, but considering the age of your drive, make sure it’s compatible; SATA has been standard since around 2006. Just check to be sure before you make any plans!

Yeah, thinking back 15 years, pretty much all laptops used SATA drives by then. If it was before 2006, there’s a slim chance it could be IDE, but otherwise, you should be fine changing it out!
