I'm on the lookout for an affordable used CPU cooler for my RTX 3070 FE and Ryzen 5 5600X setup. I'm curious about whether purchasing a used water cooler would be safe, given the risks of potential leaks. If it's not a good idea, what are some good alternatives for CPU coolers that I should consider?

I usually just air cool my setups and don't really deal with the worry of leaks. For me, it's a much simpler solution!

If it's been used, the pump might fail faster than you'd like. Just keep that in mind.

It should be okay if the cooler is just a year or two old and hasn’t been heavily used. Just keep in mind that AIO coolers have a limited lifespan. They can lose liquid over 5-10 years, which leads to air bubbles forming inside them.

Silly question, but can you actually replace the liquid in those?

It could work, but I'd still steer clear. Those coolers typically have a shorter lifespan, and there are plenty of budget-friendly new options available. You can cool a 5600X quite effectively even with basic cooling.

You might be fine, but personally, I wouldn't risk it. It depends a lot on how the previous owner treated it, and you can't always know that. It's similar to why we suggest avoiding used power supplies; the risk of serious damage just isn't worth it.

Honestly, there are so many affordable new options out there that it’s probably not worth the risk of a used cooler. Pumps can fail, leaks can happen, and radiators can clog. Check out Thermalright; they have great performance with their 240mm for $45 and 360mm for $53. Their air coolers are excellent too, with some single fan options under $20 that really do the job well.
