Is it safe to completely wipe my hard drive when switching to Linux?

Hey everyone! I'm about to switch from Windows to Linux for the first time, and I have a few sentimental files like photos and media that I want to keep. My question is, if I want to wipe everything else off my hard drive, is it enough to just back up those few files? Or should I consider backing up anything else before making the switch? Any tips would be super helpful!

You really only need to save the files you want to keep. Switching to Linux means you're adopting a completely different file structure. Think of it like turning an old book into a completely new one: all that's left is the paper. So back up your important stuff and wipe the rest without worry!

Great, thanks for the reassurance!

Absolutely! Just back up your important files to a USB drive, your phone, or even cloud storage before wiping your hard drive. Once you have your files safely stored, go ahead and wipe the whole drive—you're switching to a new file system anyway, so the old files will be replaced.
