Is it safe to keep using an old PSU that’s making noises?

Hey there! My 10.5-year-old EVGA Supernova G2 850W PSU has started making some weird noises. Sometimes, it rattles when it's idle, and I also notice coil whine when it's under load. The rattling sounds like there might be something obstructing the fan, but the fan appears to spin freely, at least when I'm checking. I'm still waiting to hear from EVGA about what load is needed to make the fan spin properly in order to test if it's broken. Right now, I'm using it in my RTX 5080 and 9800X3D build, but I'm thinking of building a low-budget PC with a 5700XT and R5 3600 soon. Should I completely stop using this PSU, or is it okay to use it for that upcoming build? Appreciate any advice you can give!

Honestly, I wouldn’t keep using it. It’s just not worth the risk with the noises it's making.

Coil whine is pretty normal when the load is high, but any other noises can be a red flag. I'd recommend getting a new PSU just because of the noise you're hearing.

With a PSU that's over 10 years old making those sounds, I would have already replaced it! There's no way I'd risk my expensive components with a PSU that old. Get a new one ASAP!

I’d suggest replacing your PSU with a 1000W Super Flower ATX 3.1 Gold. They used to manufacture PSUs for EVGA, so it's a solid choice that will handle your CPU and GPU without issues!

If it's rattling and whining, especially considering its age, it's definitely time to get a new one. It's not worth the risk of damaging other components in your system; play it safe and replace it soon!
