Is it safe to limit my RTX 4090 to 85% power with a 750W PSU?

I've been advised to run my RTX 4090 at an 85% power limit with my HX750i PSU until I upgrade to something more suitable. The card I'm using is the 4090 24GB ROG Strix Ada Lovelace. From what I understand, limiting the power reduces heavy transient spikes that could stress my current PSU, which isn't designed for that kind of load. I want to know if this suggestion is sound or if I should reconsider my approach. I plan to upgrade my PSU soon—in the meantime, is this a safe practice?

Yeah, that's totally fine! Just keep an eye on your system. If it shuts down or acts funny, lower the power limit a bit more. If you're still worried about power draw, consider limiting the frequency as well.

Great, thanks!

Transient spikes were a bigger issue with the previous generation cards, but they’re less of a concern with the 4000s and 5000s thanks to updated PSU standards. While 1600W isn't necessary, I definitely wouldn't run a 4090 off a 750W unit. If it came to that, I’d recommend limiting the power to below 70%. But, since you're upgrading soon, it sounds like you're on the right track!

I'll be upgrading in around a week or so to something proper; this is just a temporary solution.

1500W is a bit much! I run a powerful setup with an RTX Pro 6000 and a Ryzen 9 9950X3D on a 1000W PSU without issues. A good quality 1000W PSU should be fine, honestly.
