Hey everyone! I'm currently a biology grad student working with bioinformatics software to analyze some DNA sequence data. I'm running this software on my 2020 MacBook Pro, using a tutorial I found to emulate Linux so it works. It's super slow, though—the progress bar has only reached 8% after about 5.75 hours. I'm wondering if it would be harmful to my laptop if I let it run for almost three days to finish the job? I just want to make sure I'm not doing any damage. Thanks!

No worries! Your MacBook is designed to handle work for extended periods. It's built to run, so letting it function for three days shouldn't cause any harm.
In general, computers are built to run for a long time. They have built-in systems that help manage heat and protect themselves. Running a program for a few days is totally okay as long as you monitor the temperature.
As long as your MacBook isn’t overheating, it should be fine to let it run. I heard you’ve placed it on a stone countertop, which can help keep it cool! That's a smart move.
Yeah, it seems to help a lot with the heat!
