Is it Safe to Use a Jumper for Power Supply Long Term?

I've been playing around with some old electronics and I have a security camera DVR that's stopped powering a hard drive. I discovered a spare power supply unit (PSU) works to provide power to the hard drive, and I'm planning to run the whole system off this PSU. My main concern is whether using a paper clip to bridge the connections for long-term operation is safe. A lot of the jumper solutions available seem sketchier than my DIY approach!

Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend it for the long haul. The potential to draw too much power or create an unsafe circuit could end up being risky.

It sounds like you're using a jumper to short the green "Power On" pin to ground, and that's perfectly fine for turning on the PSU. Just make sure that's all you're doing. If you're trying to connect power to the hard drive with paper clips, that could be problematic as they aren’t designed for that purpose.

I’d caution you about possibly bypassing the safety features like short circuit protection when using a jumper like that. If something goes wrong, it could lead to overheating or even a fire. So, while it might work temporarily, think about safety in the long run.
