Is it time for a new monitor or can I stick with my old one for Linux?

Hey everyone! I'm facing a dilemma with my old BenQ GL2480 monitor, which only has HDMI output. I've heard there might be some issues with using HDMI on Linux, especially since I do quite a bit of gaming. I'm considering whether I should just get an HDMI-to-DP adapter to make it work, or if I should bite the bullet and buy a new monitor that has a DisplayPort input instead. What do you think? Will the adapter work fine, or is it better to invest in a new monitor?

I have a setup with various connections, and I don’t notice any difference when I run my old HDMI monitor alongside DPs and DVI on Kubuntu LTS. So, you might be good to go!

Just a heads up, some of the newer monitors may not sync properly with the older resolutions that you see in BIOS. Be careful not to buy one that can't display those formats, or you might be in for a headache down the line.

From my experience, standard HDMI connections run perfectly on Linux. It's mainly the newer HDMI 2.1 that has some licensing issues. So, anything under that should work fine for you.

Thanks for clearing that up! I noticed a lot of info just lumped HDMI together without going into the specifics.

I've been using HDMI with Linux for years myself. While DisplayPort is definitely better, HDMI gets the job done too, especially if you're not pushing the highest specs.

Honestly, HDMI works just fine on Linux, so unless you're really itching for a new monitor, I'd say stick with what you have.
