Hey everyone! I'm having trouble with my old WD My Passport Ultra 0827 external hard drive. It's been quite a while since I got it—around 2016 or 2017—and now it's showing a file system error. When I try to access it in File Explorer, I get this message: "D: is not accessible. The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error." I've already attempted some troubleshooting by connecting it to a laptop and trying different USB ports, but nothing seems to work. Windows Disk Management doesn't let me format it, and I don't have another cable to test it out. I don't mind losing the files, as they were just some old Xbox One games. I really want to use this drive again, especially to back up my new computer. So, I'm wondering, should I just get a new portable hard drive? Thanks for any advice!

Hey! Definitely check if your drive shows up in Windows Disk Manager. If it does, you can use the diskpart command to erase its structure. Just type in: diskpart, then list disk, select your disk, and clean it. Just a heads up, this will wipe everything on it, so only do this if you're okay with that. If it doesn't show up on multiple devices, there might be a hardware issue with the drive or the cable. Also, for your new backup plan, make sure you get a reliable brand—don't rely on a 10-year-old drive as your sole backup! Good luck!
I had a similar issue with an older external hard drive. You may want to consider brands like Seagate or Samsung for your next purchase; they have some pretty solid options. Just keep in mind to avoid using older drives for critical backups since they can fail unexpectedly!
