I'm currently using a Ryzen 9 5950X paired with 64GB of DDR4 RAM, and I'm contemplating whether I should upgrade to an AM5 setup with DDR5. I do a lot of 4K gaming, IT work, and manage multiple virtual machines. Should I stick with my current AM4 setup until the arrival of AM6 in a few years, or would moving to AM5 be beneficial now?

Unless you're pushing your CPU to the limit with very demanding games or workloads, upgrading to AM5 might not yield significant benefits. If you're looking for a direct upgrade, consider the 9950X with 64GB of DDR5 at 6000MT/s CL30. It will certainly be an improvement, but make sure your 5950X is genuinely bottlenecking your performance before making the leap.
The 5950X is still a solid processor. If your current setup is meeting your needs, there's no pressing reason to upgrade right now.
If you don't require extra power, it might be wise to hold onto your system until there’s a clear necessity to upgrade. Staying put until AM6 could save you some hassle and money.
If you really need more computing power, then yes, go for the 9950X. For 4K gaming specifically, unless you're using something like an RTX 5090, the difference might be minimal. It really depends on your needs.
