Is it Too Late for a Comeback in IT at 38 After Overcoming Addiction?

I'm curious if I can still re-enter the IT field at 38, considering I've been clean from heroin for over four years now and I'm feeling my mind healing. My last stint in IT was in 2019 as a desktop support technician for just a few months, and I have a bachelor's degree in IT with a solid GPA of 3.7. The only mark on my record is a minor disorderly conduct charge. After being unemployed since 2019 due to my addiction struggles and lengthy withdrawals, I'm eager to start again in a help desk or desktop support role and aim for a career as a systems administrator, and eventually IT manager. I really love working in IT and just need some encouragement that it's still possible. Also, how should I best explain my employment gap? Should I even mention my past? Have any of you gone through similar situations or know someone who has?

Absolutely! Your passion for IT and commitment to recovery are huge strengths. I know many who have turned their lives around and found success; it just starts with commitment to stay sober and keep busy. I'd also recommend getting some certifications like CompTIA A+ or Network+. At the end of the day, if you show up and put in the effort, you'll find opportunities.

You're not alone in this! I made a career switch in my 30s too and it was challenging to find that first opportunity, but it led to great things. Focus on your skills and let your work speak for itself. If a potential employer asks about your gap, just explain that it was a time for personal growth. You've got what it takes to succeed!

Of course you can! Starting from an entry-level position and upgrading your skills is a solid plan. If you're wondering about the job market, yes, it's tough but stick to your goals. Often, it’s about continuous learning and not getting discouraged by rejections. They happen to everyone. And remember, your past doesn't define your future!

Is it normal to face rejection a few times before landing a job? I always take it personally.

Yes, you can definitely do it! The path you're considering starting from help desk and moving up is realistic. Check out Managed Service Providers (MSPs) since they often look for cultural fit over specific skills. If you really want to speed up your growth, familiarize yourself with cloud services like Azure, it’s the future! Don't worry about the gap too much; just say it was for health reasons and that you're fully recovered. You've got this!

It's absolutely possible! I turned my life around at 45 after years of addiction and served time. I completed a two-year networking program, and now, years later, I'm thriving as a Senior Systems Admin making six figures. My tip is to be upfront with a letter that explains your journey—your past, what you learned, and what you've done since. Honesty goes a long way, especially in interviews. There are people who are willing to give you a chance. Good luck out there! 💪

Did you struggle with hopelessness during your addiction? Did you start in help desk roles like I'm planning to?
