I'm a professional CPA who's always had a passion for computers and coding, especially in web design and creating online tools. Even though I pursued a career in accounting and am now a qualified CPA, I'm considering making the switch to the tech side. I'm currently working on my master's degree in data analytics. What advice do you have for someone like me looking to enter the programming world at 37?

I made the leap to software engineering at 40, and while it was a tough job market (it took me about a year to land a position), it was worth it. Consider keeping your CPA job while you're studying or job searching; that might ease the financial strain and keep you grounded. Persistence is key!
Start with what you already know! If you're comfortable with spreadsheets, try using scripting to improve your data management. Then, pick a programming language like C# or Java—both are widely used and have lots of resources available. Utilizing AI tools can also help boost your learning, but don't rely on them entirely. Make sure you understand what's going on, especially relative to your current workflow. It can make the transition smoother!
Just remember, analytics and programming are different fields, so make sure you're ready for the coding side!
If programming is something you want to do, go for it! There's no rule saying you can't switch careers. It's all about what makes you happy and fulfilled. Just take that leap!
Totally agree! Age shouldn't hold anyone back from pursuing their dreams.
What made the job search so challenging? Was it mainly ageism, or were there skill gaps?
