Is it worth getting a 7800x3d or should I settle for a 7600?

I'm in the process of upgrading my PC, and I got a great deal on a 5070. Now I'm trying to pick a CPU. I have the option to buy the 7800x3d for around $380 from a retailer with a warranty or grab it for just $263 from AliExpress without a warranty. Is the cheaper price worth losing the warranty? Alternatively, I could save some cash and go for a 7600, priced at about $175. I currently play at 1080p, but I plan to upgrade to a 1440p monitor soon. Most of my games are strategy titles – will the x3d features even make a difference for those games?

Why would you choose the 7800x3d over the 9800 for your new build?

The performance difference between the 7800x3d and the 7600 will depend heavily on your GPU, resolution, settings, and the games you play. But with your setup, sticking with 1080p may not take full advantage of what the 5070 can do. Upgrading to 1440p should show better performance, but you need to benchmark against your gameplay style.

If you're planning to game at 1080p, I'd definitely suggest going with the x3d to avoid any bottlenecks with the 5070. You're going to get much better frame rates, especially in demanding games like Cyberpunk or Call of Duty. If you're committed to upgrading to 1440p, then either CPU will be fine, but the x3d will help you push out more frames.

I’m currently using a 7600X at 1440p and it’s already struggling with some games while I multitask (like browsing YouTube or Discord). Honestly, I’d recommend considering either a 7700X or 9700X if you can manage the budget. It’s always better to stick with trusted retailers that offer warranties, unless the price difference is really significant.

The x3D CPUs do improve game performance, especially your 1% lows, which leads to a smoother overall experience. If you’re gaming frequently, it could be worth the investment.
