I've got a 256 GB SATA SSD currently hosting my OS and a 1 TB hard drive for extra storage. Recently, I picked up a 1 TB NVMe SSD and I'm considering reinstalling my OS on it. My SATA SSD basically just has the OS, so I wouldn't lose much if I move it. However, I've heard mixed things about keeping the OS on a separate drive—I'm worried there might be issues if I make the switch. What's the best approach here?

Definitely move your OS to the NVMe! Your boot drive should always be the fastest available to ensure optimal performance.
Honestly, moving to the NVMe won’t make a huge difference for day-to-day tasks. But if you want the best performance, it’s a solid idea.
The idea that you should keep the OS on a separate drive hasn’t been a recommendation for a long time. It's more beneficial to have your OS on the fastest drive, period. So yes, go ahead and set it up on the NVMe—there really aren't any downsides for most users!
If you're comfortable with it, one option is to partition the NVMe SSD after you install your OS on it. If your current setup is booting fast enough from the SATA SSD, you might as well leave it there for now. When it's time for a reinstall, you can move everything to the NVMe then!
Always better to start fresh! I'd recommend doing a clean install on the NVMe SSD. Just unplug the SATA SSD, install Windows on the NVMe, then plug the SATA back in to transfer any files you want to keep.
